Dear women,

Our next trip is here! We can’t wait to go on this free, creative coastal walk with you!

We have 14 spaces available, so please book in advance to ensure your place.

Wild Writing Walk: Lulworth Cove

Saturday 2nd July, 2022 – Day Trip

(8.45AM to 5.15 Approx, travel time included)

Join Grace The Space and writer Alice Flynn, and Lowland Hike Leader Lisa Phaure for a day of walking and nature-based creative writing in and around Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. You’ll leave the day reinvigorated and relaxed, along with three pieces of new writing, created by you!

WHO IS THIS FOR?

  • We’re excited to share this free event with Dorset-based women.
  • We would especially like to encourage diverse groups of women to join us: women of colour, women who feel marginalised, women who have experienced isolation over the last couple of years, women experiencing low mood and/or anxiety.
  • We’d love to invite women who might not consider themselves ‘walkers’ or ‘writers’, women who might not necessarily see themselves as creative, but are curious to explore! You might have writing experience or you might have none – either is perfect!

WHAT WILL THE DAY BE LIKE?

Our day will both relaxing and rejuvenating. It includes a free minibus from Bournemouth to Lulworth Cove, a guided hike along the coastal paths – some of the hills are challenging, but we will move at a pace that takes care of everyone and there will be plenty of pause points along the way where we will explore creating poetry and creative writing, take in the views and enjoy our packed-lunch picnic!

If you’re travelling from outside of Bournemouth, you are also welcome to join us on site. If travel costs are an issue, please be in touch with Alice so we can support you with that – we want this day to be accessible for all!

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS:

TIMINGS:

Saturday 2nd July: Wild Writing for Wellbeing: Women’s Walk – LULWORTH COVE

Free minibus departs Littledown pick-up point at 8.45am. Depart Bournemouth Station at 9am

Arrive at Lulworth Cove Car Park: 10am.

We will then walk along the coast, circle inland back to Lulworth Cove Car Park.

Depart: Lulworth Cove Car Park by 4pm

Arrive at Bournemouth and Littledown drop-offs at approximately 5 and 5.15pm, respectively.

 ABOUT THE DAY:

  • The terrain: We’ll be walking 7 miles (about 4- 4.5 hrs) on coastal path and then fields. The coastal path has a few challenging steep hills, but we will move at a pace that ensures everyone is able to participate.
  • We will pause at the top of the hills for the writing exercises and, on one, to eat our packed-lunches.
  • We’ll write in response to our place in nature, being moved by our movement and the nature around us.
  • There will be public toilets available at start and end of the walk (in the car park). For the rest of the hike participants will need to ‘wild wee’ along the way if necessary.
  • We advise not booking anything in for that evening, so there is no time pressure to get back. We’ll walk at the pace of the whole group and timings will be guided by this.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE DAY

  • A comfortable rucksack:
  • Water bottle(s). IMPORTANT: the route is exposed to the sun and there’s nowhere to stop for water along the way, it’s vital to carry at least 2 Litres of water. If you are of a larger build, you may need more water. You might also bring a sports drink with you.
  • For this same reason of exposure, please bring suncream, sunglasses, sunhat/cap and lipbalm.
  • Waterproof jacket (perhaps waterproof trousers, too) in case of rain.
  • A packed lunch. There are no shops en route. Please also pack plenty of snacks that are energy rich eg. dried figs, dates, oatcakes, nutbars or similar.
  • Tissues/antibac gel if you like.
  • If you have any medication you might need, or if you need an Epi pen or asthma inhaler, please ensure you bring it on the day (and let Alice know about this for Health & Safety purposes)
  • Any other personal necessities (wallet/phone etc)
  • A notebook & pen for the creative writing (bring a notebook you can lean on)

WHAT TO WEAR:

  • Wear comfortable clothes with layers for warmth and cool – plan for changeable weather!
  • Think: vest/T-shirt, light fleece layer/long-sleeved top, leggings. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting scruffy/muddy/dusty. Alice likes to pack a spare pair of shorts to swap into if it becomes too hot for leggings! Moisture-wicking sports-style clothes are recommended, as cotton can get wet with sweat.
  • It is advisable to wear/pack long sleeves, long socks or leggings in case we go through scratchy grass or in case ticks are about.
  • Hiking boots with ankle support will be ideal for the hills, with a thick hiking sock.
  • It can get windy on the cliffs, packing a thin scarf/headband/buff is a great idea to protect the ears/neck if the wind picks up.
  • If the weather is dry, you may opt for trail shoes (you can pick up a bargain at Mountain Warehouse or Decathlon, usually). It’s not ideal, but otherwise, sturdy trainers with good grip can be worn with awareness.
  • Again, pack: waterproof jacket (perhaps waterproof trousers, too if the forecast is rainy) in case of rain.
